A complete or partial covering on components of a mechanical seal to improve the tribological characteristics and protection against corrosion. Carbides, oxides, metals and plastics are used as coating materials and are applied in diverse thicknesses by a variety of processes. Coatings on sliding faces are problematical on account of their physical properties in relation to the base material. Preference should be given, therefore, to solid designs.
