Chromium oxide, Cr₂O₃, is applied to base materials by plasma spraying to form a thin, dense coat with good bonding. Due to its high resistance against wear, good corrosion resistance in acids and lyes, and good sliding properties, Cr₂O₃ is used to coat shaft sleeves, seal faces and stationary seats. Restrictions on the use of Cr₂O₃ are the small layer thicknesses, high costs and low coefficient of expansion.
