Welcome to the BURGMANN Sealing World
Direction of rotation

The sense of rotation (right-hand rotation: clockwise; left-hand rotation: anticlockwise) of a unit's shaft as seen from the drive.
A distinction is drawn between mechanical seals which depend on the direction of rotation and those which do not. Mechanical seals dependent on the direction of rotation are all those

  • n which the transmission torque is directed via a conical spring (torque transmission). The governing rule is: The spring's direction of coiling must concur with the sense of rotation of the shaft when looking at the sliding face of the rotating seal parts. Note that in multistage pumps with bilateral bearing the direction of rotation of the shaft relative to the mechanical seal reverses from the drive side to the non-drive side (see illustration).
  • which are equipped with an integrated pumping device in the form of a pumping screw. The governing rule is: Looking in the pumping direction, the sense of rotation of the rotating pumping screw (e.g. right-hand pumping thread) must he counter to the direction of rotation of the shaft (e.g. left-hand rotating shaft). The stationary part of the pumping thread is counter to the rotating pumping thread (e.g. left-hand pumping thread). For an example see the figure below.
