Running-in period

The period in which the sealing gap of a mechanical seal is first deformed and then ground to produce parallel faces by the action of the operating conditions. The running-in period is conditional on the face material pairing as well as on the operating conditions. Assuming the operating conditions are constant, the power consumption, wear rate and leakage decrease as the running-in period progresses. As a rule, the running-in period lasts less than 100 hours.
