Multiple springs

Multiple springs (multiple spring-backing). A mechanical seal's spring-backing is formed by a single spring or several helical springs which – arranged in a circle – exert the necessary contact pressure through joint action. Multiple springs enables shorter overall lengths than a single spring and is more convenient to fit on bigger mechanical seals. Mechanical seals for shaft diameters greater than 100 mm are mostly equipped with multiple springs.
