DIN ISO 5199 (February 1987) gives this definition in Section 3:
"3.17 Run-out. The total axial deviation relative to the outer plane face of the stuffing box casing (seat of the seal cover), measured using an instrument fitted on the shaft, turned in its bearings by hand in horizontal direction. The reference surface defines the alignment of a shaft seal component."
