Welcome to the BURGMANN Sealing World
Material Code according to DIN 24960

The material listing for mechanical seals in accordance with DIN 24960 is based on a system of code letters. For single-acting mechanical seals the code has 5 digits, double-acting mechanical seals it has 5 + 3 digits.

Single-acting mechanical seals or the product side of a double-acting mechanical seal:

Digit 1: material of the seal face

Digit 2: material of the stationary seat

Digit 3: material of the secondary seals

Digit 4: material of the spring(s)

Digit 5: material of the miscellaneous construction parts

Atmosphere side of a double mechanical seal:

Digit 6: material of the seal face

Digit 7: material of the stationary seat

Digit 8: material of the secondary seals

The materials for the remaining parts of the mechanical seal on the atmosphere side are not named specially, as they are usually identical with the materials for the corresponding parts on the product side. For some material groups, e.g. metal carbides, the code letters are insufficient in themselves to provide an unambiguous designation. The extra precision is usually achieved by adding code numbers (not yet standardized) to the code letters.
