Term for the thorough soaking of porous materials. After burning synthetic carbons, they display a porosity of between 20 and 25%, irrespective of the grain size of the starting material. To render them gas-tight, they are impregnated with a synthetic resin such as phenolic resin, or metals such as antimony.
