Surface silicated carbon

A material whose substrate made of electro-graphite or carbon graphite is coated with a layer of silicon carbide (SiC). The approximately 0.5-mm thick SiC layer is created by chemical vapour reaction (CVR), which entails submerging the substrate in a silicon oxide atmosphere. Transition from the SiC layer to the C core is continuous. Subsequent impregnation of the porous SiC layer is essential. The nests of graphite (approximately 10 %) in the surface improve the emergency running characteristics Surface silicated carbon is used in mechanical seals as a material for seal faces and stationary seats.
