Hydraulic oil is used most often in buffer fluid units and water in closed-buffer system circuits as buffer fluid. Requirements are:

• compatibility with the medium to be sealed
• good lubricating properties in the sealing gap
• high specific heat capacity
• no contamination
• obtainability and availability
• suitability for the existing or planned buffer system.
