| Tandem arrangement of mechanical seals | ||
The term commonly used for two single mechanical seals installed one after the other and acting in the same direction. Purpose of the mechanical seal on the atmosphere side of a tandem arrangement is either to enable pressure reduction in two stages or else to seal the quench medium and (often) to monitor the (primary) mechanical seal on the product side. In such cases, it is usual for the quench medium to be under atmospheric pressure and more rarely for it to be under a pressure lower than the pressure of the primary mechanical seal and higher than atmospheric pressure. |
